Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Diwali is one of the biggest festivals of India. The word Deepavali comes from the Sanskrit word which means row of lights. During Deepawali streets are decorated and illuminated and and diyas are lit. Diwali signifies "the awareness of the inner light". Hindus clean and decorate their homes to welcome goddess Lakshmi on this auspicious day. Beautiful rangolis are drawn outside the home and houses are decorated with torans of mango leaves and marigold. Diyas are lightened in the evening and crackers are busted. Sweets are made and distributed among friends and family. Gold Jewellery bought on this day is said to bring in the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the representation of wealth and Prosperity.Gold Coins and Jewellery are gifted or bought in the auspicious occasion of Diwali. Shops selling sweets, jewellery and cloths see huge crowds in the month of Deepavali.

Deepawali holds special significance for the Hindus. It is beleaved that it is on this day Lord Ram along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile after killing the Ravana. Another story associated with Diwali is that of the Narakasur who terrorised people.The other events associated with Deepawali the completion of austerity of Shakthi and the Govardana Puja where Krishna defeats Indra.
